The October Neudata Conference In Paris
Economic Thinking when Surrounded by Alt Data
The October 2024Neudata conference will be in Paris.
I will deliver a talk titled “Economic Thinking when Surrounded by Alt Data”.
Here are the ideas I will go around:
The last ten years have seen data describing the state of the world flowing from everywhere. On the one hand they carry the promise of nowcasting the state of the economy, and in so doing allow to take better informed investment or financial decisions. On the other hand some have a short history, and they all have biases that have to be corrected before each application. More importantly investors and intermediaries went from a situation of massaging forever the same data to an infinite menu: how to not been attracted by continuing to blindly process the data like before, and take a step aside to make real choices? Economic thinking is a way to get a compass in this constellation of datasets, that are grounded in the real economy: they have a natural structure that can give us a way to make choices and identify the next dataset to focus on.
